Kuryokhin’s concert on 14 April 1984 is generally considered to have been the first "Pop Mekhanika” performance. Kumpf’s pictures of the concert show a large jazz section and a smaller rock section, conducted by Sergey Kuryokhin with his characteristic expressive gestures. |

This was the fifth Pop Mekahnika concert and first to take place in Leningrad (after two preceding concerts in Moscow, one in Riga and one in Novosibirsk). “PM No.12” (already) had an extended rock section, next to an impressive brass section with seven musicians, among them Vladimir Bolushevsky, Aleksey Rakhov, Michail Chernov "Uncle Misha", and Sergey Letov, Three string musicians completed the orchestra: Boris Rayskin and Vsevolod Gakkel, who both played the violoncello, and a violin player. |

The Russian Academy of Arts, Moscow, and the Academy of Arts Berlin (Akademie der Künste) commissioned Sergey Kuryokhin and Frieder Butzmann to stage a production in honour of Dmitry Shostakovich. The production was to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Shostakovich’s death in 1995. |

Sergey Kuryokhin Nantes, Festival "Les Allumées", 1991 |
At a moment when the West was ready embrace Russia again, Pop Mekhanika’s anarchic spirit made these performances extremely attractive for the Western cultural world. They were in striking contrast to the grey and dull image of the Soviet Union, and it follows the logic that PM concerts were staged in the West especially between 1988 till 1991: They came from the USSR, they were new, daring and a “massive attack” on the senses. The audience’s expectations were high. |

Sergey Kuryokhin (left) and Sergey Khrenov (right). Leningrad, 1983. Photo by Hans Kumpf. |
Together with Alexander Kan, Khrenov founded the Leningrad “Contemporary Music Club“ or CMC for Jazz music, organising concerts in the smaller hall of the Lensoviet Palace of Culture.Thirteen letters from Sergey Khrenov to Hans Kumpf document the correspondence between the Russian writer and translator and the (West) German free jazz clarinettist. The correspondence lasted from 1981 and 1984, a period roughly coinciding with Kumpf’s five visits to the USSR between 1980 and 1984. |

Timur Novikov's flyer for the “New Artists”exhibition at the Sverdlov Palace of Culture, Leningrad, 1988. |
In the absence of systematic data regarding the New Artists' “biography”, researchers commonly use information from Timur Novikov’s texts. This is an obvious choice: because of Novikov’s role for the New Artists, these texts are considered to be authoritative. Yet a number of discrepancies appear upon comparing these texts with documentation available through other sources. |

Because of the apparent political context of USA-CCCP-CHINA, the spiritual-religious dimensions of Kozlov’s compositions may not be evident at first sight. The lecture presents such “hidden” symbols in selected works. |
