(E-E) Evgenij Kozlov ‘E-E = mc3’

An introduction by Hannelore Fobo

In the 1980s, Evgenij Kozlov adopted the artist’s name ‘E-E’, pronounced in Russian ‘Ye-Ye’. This is a reference to the rhythm of pop-music, the lightness and freshness of ‘yeah-yeah’, and, most importantly, to the innate sense of affirmation and self-confidence that the phrase embodies. The letter ‘E’ is in itself a very interesting graphic element and appears in many of his works. From 2005, Kozlov made ‘E-E’ his only signature, and he has subsequently added it to his birth name.

At the end of the 1990s, Kozlov decided to enlarge Albert Einstein’s equation for mass-energy equivalence, using the double ‘E’ to create a new formula defining his own art: E-E = mc3. In this equation, ‘m’ stands for microphone, ‘c’ for creativity, and ‘c-cubed’ for yesterday, today, tomorrow.

‘Microphone’ is synonymous with the voice – creation by the word or logos. This creation out of nothing, which has intrigued philosophers and physicists alike, is one step before the creation of matter, represented by mass in Einstein’s formula. Likewise, ‘c-cubed’ focuses on the moment before time is born. While with E=mc2 there is an ongoing dispute about whether the properties of energy and mass are convertible, or whether mass ‘contains’ energy, Kozlov’s formula elegantly removes mass altogether and makes time timeless. It concentrates not on the birth of matter, as with Einstein, but on its pre-physical condition, which Kozlov experiences as ‘knowledge’, and this he recreates in his art.

For Kozlov’s first solo show in London, gallery owner Hannah Barry and artist Shaun McDowell have selected works from different years and artistic periods, in order to provide an insight into the artist’s exceptionally varied œuvre. Along with larger works such as “In the VXXI Century people will.” (1998), “Beware! Art” (1998), and “The River of Forgetfulness” (1993), the exhibition presents examples from several comprehensive cycles: “The Book of Hours” (2005), “E-E Fairy tale” (1982. 1997. 2007), and “Century XX” (89. 92. 2004. 2007. 2008.).

H. Fobo, 2015.
