The New Artists • Новые художники

Leningrad, Sverdlov House of Culture, 22-25 April 1988

In 1987, (E-E) Evgenij Kozlov created five large works I later summarised as White on Red – they were painted with white paint on red calico for banners. With the help of these media, Kozlov “rebranded” Soviet symbols by removing their political charge. Three of these works were first exhibited at the Sverdlov House of Culture:

— Звезда / Star 207 x 225 cm, paint on textile, 1987

— CCCP ca. 198 x 530 cm, paint on textile, 1987

— Звезда. 6 Фигур / Star. Six Figures.  211 x 230 cm, paint on textile, 1987

Also exhibited at the Sverdlov House of Culture was one of Kozlov’s figurative works from 1988 later called “Anna Karenina 1”, a double portrait with Sergei Bugaev and Timur Novikov.

— Anna Karenina 1, mixed media on canvas, 215 x 149 cm, 1988

Together with (at least) six more of Kozlov’s works, these four paintings went on the first large international New Artists exhibition tour in 1988/1989. Venues were the Kulturhuset, Stockholm (August / September 1988) more>>, the Kunsternes Hus, Aarhus (October / November1988), Husets Udstilling, Copenhagen (December 1988/Jnauray 1989), the Bluecoat Gallery, Liverpool more>> , and the Tate Gallery Liverpool (January/ February 1989).

The following is short presentation of these four works.
A detailed despcription of Star as the logotype for the exhibtions at Aarhus and Liverpool is available here >>
