Text on the back cover (Polish / English):

Projekt „Notatki z podziemia” śledzi bliskie i często dynamiczne związki pomiędzy artystami wizualnymi i muzykami w Europie Wschodniej w okresie rządów komunistycznych.
Notes from the Underground explores the close and often dynamic relationship between visual artists and musicians in Eastern Europe under communist rule. The vibrant cultures that formed at the crossroads of art and music subscribed to the idea that they presented an alternative to mainstream tastes and social conventions. Sometimes they were met with censorship and control by regimes which viewed all forms of difference with suspicion. Rock in the 1970s and, later, punk and new wave were as much sensibilities as musical genres and, as such, stimulated innovative visual art, film and literature as well as idiosyncratic ways of living.

Kozlov was one of the founders of the New Artists group in Leningrad in 1982, perhaps the most influential art phenomenon in the Soviet Union in its last decade. Active from the late 1970s, Kozlov had been a member of the Letopis group and had his first exhibition in what was to become Timur Novikov's ASSA gallery and studio. An important part of Kozlov's large body of work from the 1980s are vivid portraits - provided by his photographs, collages, drawings and paintings - of the artists and musicians allied to the New Artists. He also designed album sleeves and set designs for Kino and other emerging new wave acts. In the 1980s Kozlov assumed the pseudonym 'E-E', pronounced in Russian 'Yeh-Yeh'. (He has since added it to his legal name). Evoking the rhythm and bright affirmation of pop music, it expresses values found in much of Kozlov's art. After the philosophical language-games favoured by Russian conceptual art of the 1970s and rejecting Soviet academicism, Kozlov expressed a new kind of vital energy associated with unbridled fantasy and desire. Kozlov's art refused to be limited by the constraints of Soviet life. Kozlov's own Leningrad studio, Russkoee Polee (The Russian Field) which he ran between 1989-1991) was a key zone of interaction for artists, curators and gallerists, many visiting the city from abroad. Here, for instance, Kozlov arranged Vladislav Mamyshev-Monroe's first photo-sessions and supported his early performances.

In 1994 he opened the Russkoee Polee2 in a disused factory in Berlin (closed in 2008), the city where he has lived and worked since.
